HW #2 (DUE: 02/07)
Create a Google Map containing the following layers in Tarrant County, TX. When clicked, the markers for each type should provide the street address of the establishment. Upload the all associated files into MavSpace, and make the directory public. I will take a look at your webpage during class next week.
Class Plan (01/31)
Today's Exercise:
- Create a Google Map showing the location of all of the current foreclosures in Dallas County. To include basemap data in ArcMap, use the Census_TIGER2000 service from Geography Network.
- Necessary Resources:
- ArcMap2GMap
- ArcMap2GMap Sample Data
- HUD Foreclosure Listings
- BatchGeocode.com
- Also, try Excel Geocoding Tool ( - backup - )
- We must specify a geographic coordinate system. See here for more info.
- Yahoo! Maps geocoding service uses WGS84
- X - Longitude
- Y - Latitude
- Coordinate System: Geographic/World/WGS84
- Upload to MavSpace and create an accessible webpage.
- Time & Mood Permitting: Include HTML formatting in the Google Map popup.'
- Extract ArcMap2GMap directly to the C:/ directory. This should create C:/ArcMap2GMap
- Launch C:/ArcMap2GMap/ArcMap2GMap.mxd
- At this point we will play around with ArcMap2GMap to see what it can do for us.
- Minimize ArcMap
- Download foreclosure listings
- Open file in Microsoft Excel and clean table by removing all characters in the topo field row except for letters, numbers, and underscores. Also, field names may not start with a number.
- Copy data in Excel table and paste into BatchGeocode to geocode.
- Copy and paste the geocoded results back into the Excel file, overwriting the original table.
- In Excel, save as an Excel 97-2003 Workbook. ArcGIS can not read XLSX files nor can they read HTML-formatted Excel files.
- Maximize ArcMap
- Add table to ArcMap
- Right-click table and select Display XY Data
- X: Long | Y: Lat
- To enter the spatial reference: Click Edit/Select/Geographic Coordinate Systems/World/WGS_1984
- OK, OK, OK
- Export temporary XY Event Class to a permanent shapefile: Right-click the Event Class/Data/Export Data. Ensure a reasonable output location and file name. OK
- If prompted, yes you would like to add the recently exported file to the map as a layer.
- Click the ArcMap2GMap button.
- Fill out form and voila, we have maptastic!

Welcome to the Class
Welcome to the class.
This Selected Topics course is a project-based course where the entire semester is focused on completing a specific project. The project focuses on residential property investment strategies using GIS. Each student will individually develop a strategy to select foreclosures for investment in the Tarrant County, TX.
What does this mean?
This means we will be accessing MLS data, HUD Foreclosure data, TAD data, and Crime Rankings, and other datasets. This means that we will be including all of this data into Geographic Information Systems (GIS). We will use ArcGIS 9. This also means that we will learn how to automate this process.
What experience do I need?
None at all. GIS experience will be helpful, but is not required. Likewise, real estate experience is helpful, but is not required.
But, I have no interest whatsoever in residential property investment !
No worries. All of the skills you will learn are transferable. It will be fun no matter what...
This sounds pretty good. I think you are the best instructor ever!
Yep... You're well on your way to earning an 'A' with thinking like that.
